What the Surplus of Covid-19 Vaccines Means in Portugal
It has been announced that there is a goal to administer 100,000 vaccines administered per day within “two to three weeks” with the outcome of having all the people in Portugal 60+ vaccinated with at least one dose before June begins. Here are a few reasons why this is particularly good news:
Total Population of Portugal 10.28 million (2019)
Portugal Population 55-64 years: 13.08%
Portugal Population 65 years and over: 20.92%
Portugal has the 4th oldest population behind Finland, Italy, and Japan (at #1)
96% of Covid-19 related deaths in Portugal fit into these age groups
Basically, Portugal’s aging population, the most at risk makes up a large chunk of the country. The surplus in vaccines means that elderly people will be vaccinated and people below 60-years old can begin to get their vaccines.
How Many Covid Vaccines Are Expected to Arrive in Portugal?
It is said Portugal is due to receive more than 9 MILLION doses of the vaccines. Here’s the breakdown of what is expected:
- Pfizer – 5.5 million
- Moderna – 795.6 thousand
- AstraZeneca – 1.6 million
- Janssen 1.2 million
That’s three times more than has been received since vaccinations began!!! If Portugal gets the vaccines expected above, there will be enough to vaccinate the 1.3 million Portuguese people over 60-years old who have not gotten their vaccination.
Sadly, because of the minuscule risk of blood clots and fearmongering that has been going on, Portugal does not advocate people under 60 to get the AstraZeneca vaccine (I’d gladly take it).
The Janssen vaccine is also being held at bay by the European Union who will let its member states make the decision on this vaccine. Portugal is reviewing the risks.
My mom, who is in the over 60 group, just filled out the form to request an appointment. She chose next week and was told that she will get an SMS message to confirm.

How to Get the Covid Vaccine in Portugal if You Are 55 or Over
If you are 65 years old or over and have not gotten your Covid-19 vaccine in Portugal, you can request an appointment. Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to request an appointment to get your Coronavirus vaccine in Portugal.
1. CLICK THIS TO GO TO THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH WEBSITE
This is the website where you can request your Covid-19 vaccine appointment if you are 65 or over.
2. ENTER YOUR DATE OF BIRTH
3. ENTER YOUR SNS NUMBER, FULL NAME, AND DOB
Your SNS number is the number you are registered with at Portugal’s National Health Services. If you don’t have one, there is a link you can follow at this step. When you are done filling out your information, click “validar”
4. CHOOSE A VACCINATION LOCATION
5. CHOOSE A DATE
6. WAIT FOR CONFIRMATION
At this time your request has been registered, but you still have to wait to be contacted by the National Health Service. There is an option on this page to generate a confirmation (I highly recommend that you do that), and a link to cancel the appoitnment. It’s as simple as that. I’ll update this once my mom has gotten her stabby stab!
