Is it legal to smoke in Portugal?  I heard it's decriminalized but are there like weed bars or private clubs like in Spain?  I know it's not like Amsterdam but hopefully a bit like Amsterdam :)

Hi Stuart,

DISCLOSURE - I am not a lawyer, I am not encouraging anyone to follow any behavior, just answering a question asked :)

Is it legal to smoke in Portugal? It's not illegal, it has been decriminalized and there is a maximum amount that you can have on your person for personal use (I believe it is 25 grams of mj and 5 grams of hash). If someone gets caught with a joint, the worst that will happen is the cops will take it from you. That being said, Portuguese people don't really smoke pot...and if they do, they do it in the privacy of their own home. There was a huge drug problem in Portugal in the 1980's, so drug use is not looked at favorably here. To put it in perspective at one point, 1% of the population was addicted to heroin and Portugal had the highest HIV infection rate in the EU. Now even kids don't do drugs, drug use has declined significantly in the 15- to 24-year-old demographic.

I heard it’s decriminalized but are there like weed bars or private clubs like in Spain? No, there are no private weed bars of private clubs like in Spain. I would discourage people from buying weed in Lisbon, what's sold on the streets is pretty much oregano. Won't do you any harm, but you're wasting your money. You may also get some dirty looks from the locals.
