Dear Blanca,
I’m in Lisbon, Portugal and recently encountered an awkward situation. I was walking through the city and noticed a family wearing leggings! This might not be odd in other places, but it seems so out-of-the-ordinary in Portugal. Are people really wearing leggings here?
I’m hoping you can help me make sense of this Lisbon legging dilemma! Hoping to hear from you soon,
Worried in Lisbon,
Wanda Woes.
Dear Wanda,
I’m glad you wrote to me with your Lisbon leggings dilemma! As a woman who lives in Lisbon, Portugal, I’m very familiar with the local fashion. People do, in fact, wear leggings here, which might come as a surprise. But, Portugal has adopted leggings into its fashion scene as a symbol of modernity.
As you may know, traditional clothing in Portugal is made from heavy materials like velvet and brocade. Elaborate embroidery and big, voluminous skirts characterize the typical Portuguese dress. But, Portuguese fashion has evolved over time, and now there’s a range of styles to choose from. Brands like Cortefiel and Salsa, as well as small local boutiques, are rolling out different versions of leggings every season. Think jeggings, cropped leggings, patterned leggings – whatever look you’re going for, there’s probably a Portuguese version of it.
At the same time, shopping in Portugal can be done affordably. From flat-front leggings in basic colors like black and navy, to bolder statements like double-layered organza patterned leggings, you can find reasonably priced leggings all over Lisbon. Plus, there are some great options available if you’re looking for something a little different:
– Luxury Leggings: brands like Max Mara and H&M offer luxury versions of leggings that are perfect for a night out or special occasion
– Eco-friendly Leggings: if you’re looking for something a little greener, check out leggings made from sustainable materials such as organic cotton and bamboo
– Vintage-Inspired Leggings: for a throwback look, many local boutiques carry vintage-inspired leggings with eye-catching details like florals, paisleys and geometric patterns
In conclusion, wearing leggings in Portugal is very popular due to its affordability and variety. Portuguese fashion brands have also played a huge role in making leggings a go-to staple in everyone’s wardrobe. If you’re ever back in Lisbon, have fun trying out all the different types of leggings – you’re sure to find something for every look!
Happy exploring,
Blanca Valbuena.
