So from what I gather from your blog you need a 6-month lease to get the Portuguese long term residency. Can I sign a lease with a landlord, do my paperwork with immigration then break the lease? I am just thinking about doing this because if the landlord I get is crappy or the apartment has issues I don't want to be stuck in a place for 6-months just for my immigration status. I was also thinking about getting two apartments and using one as an office. Could I use that office one as a permanent residency? One more question, could I get on someone else lease and just that. We have a community of people who are thinking about getting an apartment for the group.

Hi Yun. Yes you can break a lease but that will be between you and your landlord. The lease has to be registered with the AT (tax authority) so you will have to do a new registration. This can be accepted by Immigration but they will ask questions. Be prepared to answer and show you have had continuous residency in Portugal.
On your quesiton about a "community lease". Sounds fishy and you will get caught. A group can have an apartment but you must reside in Portugal for the majority of the time while you are on a Visa.
