We are moving from London to Portugal next spring and trying to decide if we take are semi-new Toyota with us.  It only 2-years old and in great shape.  The concern we have is that we are still making payments and that we have to pay some tax to bring it to Portugal even though we are still part of the EU.   Is it worth keeping the car or selling it then rebuying one in Portugal?  Also, what is the cost for a midsize Toyota used?  Maybe we can sell our car there?  Thank you.

I did not bring my car to Portugal because everyone told me how crazy expensive it would be. First, you need to consider the import tax which is calculated according to the type of car, emissions level rating, and the car's age.

You also need to consider if the car is on a lease or if you own it completely. You may need to check to see if the lease holder allows you to move it outside of the country.

Each person moving to Portugal can import one car that has been owned by them for at least 6 months.

You will also need the Certificado de Conformidade (COC) of the car (you can get this from your car manufacturer).

Then you will need to matriculate the car, I think the cost is around €70, €45 for registration, and €15 for plates.

If you want to do this, you need to fill the application within 6 months of your arrival at the Alfândega for your region.

Like I said, pretty much everyone who has gone through the process said it was not worth the hastle or money.

I'm not sure how much a new Toyota will cost you, but I'll see what I can find out.
