Rise of Natural Gas Prices

Feeling the Burn: The Rise of Natural Gas Prices in Portugal

The rise of Natural gas prices should come as no surprise. Although Portugal is not dependent on Russia for gas, it is a part of the EU. This has caused an increase of about 3% that started on January 1. In Portugal, the monthly bill (on average) runs around €27. For people who pay around the average, the bill should only go up 0.76 cents which is still very affordable. Today, I’ll give you an example of how much my gas prices have increased over the years and regulated gas contracts which may help you lower your bill.

How Much Have My Natural Gas Prices Increased In Lisbon?

I figured you would want to get an idea as to how much natural gas prices have increased for me. I am with Galp .

Below is a chart showing the averages for 2021, 2022, and what I had to pay this month (no surprise, the price significantly increased). This should help you gauge what the price of Natural gas is in Lisbon, Portugal.

My flat is about 80 meters and there are only 2 of us there (and Santino, of course).

2021 Avg

€28.30

2022 Avg

€38.81

2023 Jan Payment

€69.37

Even though Portugal is not directly dependent on Russian natural gas, the recent cuts in supply to other European countries have had an effect on gas prices here as well. This is a reason that suppliers blame for high prices, but the good news is that the regulated market tariffs have seen the smallest increases.

What Is A Regulated Gas Contract?

You’re probably wondering what the regulated gas market is. Turns out it’s a great way to save on your energy bills if you live in Portugal.

There is an entity called ERSE (The Energy Services Regulator.=). It sets the prices for natural gas in the Portuguese market annually. As a result of a law that came out last year, all residential customers who use 10,000 cubic meters or less of natural gas per year can join in on the savings.

If you have not done so yet, you can switch to the regulated natural gas market for free. There is not supposed to be any disruption in your gas service, but it may take around three weeks to process.
