What is Portugal’s climate type?

Dear Blanca,

My friends and I are planning a wild and crazy trip from Chattanooga to Portugal, but we’re not quite sure what to pack! I’m hoping you can tell me what climate type is in Portugal?

Cheers,
Charlena from Chattanooga

Dear Charlena,

I’m excited to hear you’re planning a big trip to Portugal! It’s a beautiful country with plenty of sights to see and plenty of adventures to have.

Since you asked about Portugal’s climate, let me start with a brief overview. The climate of Portugal is typically Mediterranean climate, which is characterized by mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. This type of climate is very common throughout much of the Mediterranean region and is known for producing abundant crops of fruits and vegetables, including olives and grapes!

The climate of Portugal also differs from the climate of its bordering countries, Spain and France. While Spain has a primarily temperate climate, France’s climate is maritime, characterized by mild summers and cool, wet winters.

I must say, living in Portugal with the mild and dry summers has been very enjoyable for the past several years. During winter, there’s plenty of rain and temperatures can even reach as low as 0°C. On the other hand, the summer months can be quite hot, with temperatures reaching up to 30°C.

The mildly dry climate of Portugal is part of the foundation for the country’s unique culture and way of life. The mountain ranges and coastal plains of Portugal provide a range of activities, such as:

• Surfing
• Swimming
• Biking
• Exploring the natural wonders of the country

Plus, with its abundance of locally-grown fruits and vegetables, it’s no surprise that Portugal is known for its delicious and healthy cuisine.

I truly believe that the Mediterranean climate of Portugal is key to the country’s regions, its inhabitants, and its culture.

I hope this answers your question on Portugal’s climate! Enjoy your trip!

Cheers,
Blanca Valbuena.
