So I have seen some terrible websites. Designed by “so-called” agencies but this is by far the worst splash pages I’ve ever seen.
Auchan, formerly Jumbo, is a french supermarket chain that I frequent rarely. Here in Portugal they are one of the big five markets (Continente, Pingo Doce, Supercor, Intermarche). Supercor (In Corte Ingles) is by far the best. It’s not even a competition. When I am forced to shop at the Auchan market it’s if I need need some electronics. They have a pretty large selection but like every electronic in Portugal expect to pay 30% more with 30% less of a selection. There food selection like in every market (except Supercor) is almost exactly the same. It’s like they literally are buying from the same catalog.
“We need at least 10 types of smoked jamon. Check! 1 brand of Chicken, 1 brand of Turkey, 4 brands coffee. Make sure to stamp one made in Portugal and price it 2x higher…for national pride.” – every supermarket except Supercor
Now I know we are going through the Covid Crisis but this is ridiculous. As the head of a real digital agency who focuses on SEO and digital marketing this is a joke.
In the Google SERP the first postion goes to this waiting page. So can you imagine the amount of people not able to shop online. I was literally looking to research the price of a television and now because they are “offline” I will go to Fnac or Corte Ingles.
Advice for the junior webmaster at Auchan, leave the page up and disable the shopping cart. Or if you have “too much traffic” use a CDN.
Also Auchan, with this Covid Crisis people are looking for hours and other information on there local supermarket. You’re creating more of a problem that could cause people to more hassle because they have to shop elsewhere. My advice Auchan…fire your tech advisors. Modern sites don’t have a waiting list.
