What Are The Origins of Carnival

Just like Brazil’s Carnival, and Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Portugal’s carnival can be directly traced back to the Roman and pagan festivals that honored the god Saturn. Lates, as Christianity gained grounds, these celebrations were marked by feasting, drinking, and revelry, and were a way for people to let loose before the start of Lent. Over the centuries, the carnival has evolved and taken on different forms in different parts of the country. In the north, the carnival is characterized by large parade floats and elaborate costumes, while in the south, the focus is on street parties and live music.

What Are Different Carnaval Celebrations in Portugal

Many places hold Carnaval Celebrations in Portugal. Below is a sneak peak at the biggest and most well known Portuguese Carnaval celebrations. These are just blurbs of information, but I will be writing up separate pieces with a ton of detail for each celebration.

Lisbon's Entrudo

Ovar's Fantasia

This Carnaval in the city of Ovar features the Fantasia parade with a wide array of costumes, including traditional folk costumes and more modern designs. Spectators can enjoy a lively parade of floats, dancers, and musicians as they make their way through the streets.

Madeira's Desfile Da Rainha

Madeira (a Portuguese archipelago near Morocco) is known to have one of the best Carnaval celebrations. If you want to go, you’ll want to stay in Funchal, this is where the main evvents happen. The “Desfile da Rainha,” or “Parade of the Queen,” is the main event and features a grand procession of floats and costumed participants. The costumes are often decorated with feathers, sequins, and tons of things that sparkle (and as you know I am a fan of things that sparkle). There is live music, dancing, and an overall party atmosphere that is sure to get you in the spirit.

Carnaval in Loule

The town of Loulé in the Algarve region is known for its colorful and lively Carnaval celebrations. The event features a parade of floats and costumed participants that winds its way through the streets of the town, accompanied by live music and entertainment. The costumes are often bright, extravagant and adorned with glittering embellishments, and the parade is a true spectacle that should not be missed. Additionally, Loulé’s Carnaval is also known for its traditional folk costumes, which are worn by locals and visitors alike. The parade usually starts at Largo da Feira Nova, and goes through the main streets of the city.
