Hello.  I am moving to Portugal with me 15-year old daughter and we are beginning to look for a house in the Sintra area.   My daughter being 15 years old I have a bit of concern about who her friend will be when she attends school in the fall.  Is drinking and smoking pot a thing in Portugal?   We are from a conservative Christian community in Michigan and I am leery of who she will hang out with.  I wouldn't want her to fall into the wrong crowd.  Do you have any advice for a concerned single mother?  Love the blog, it's been tons of help.  Great search tool also!

As in every country of the world you should be concerned with who your children's friends are. Portugal is no different. The age for drinking is 18. Do teens drink beforehand, yes. Just like in most western countries. Maybe a bit more in Portugal (wine is served at most meals). Sintra is kind of boring for a kid so they will have friends throughout Greater Lisbon if they go to an International School. Most the International School kids I have met are amazing. Very studious and respectful. I wouldn't really be concerned too much but as with children talk with them. Keep your commication lines with them and do always judge.

There is a "Christian" evangelical community here in Portugal. Google around join one of the groups. The majority of Portugese are Catholics but usually don't put there religion in your face like Americans do.
