Hi Ray,

I checked a few of the insurance websites and they keep this pretty open. For most of them, a preexisting condition is one where the insurad person was or should have been aware of before subscribing to the insurance policy.

Most of the Portuguese Health Insurance Companies state that a pre-existing condition if you have properly been diagnosed, have had treatment for it, or have noticed signs of the condition prior to joining their insurance plan.

You may want to call Medis and other insurance companies to see what their policy is when it comes to Asthma. I've got a friend who works in insurance, so I'm going to send this question her way to see what she says.
