Transfer of pension funds

Hi great blog so helpful. Following the comments that the SEP asked a person to transfer their pension funds from the USA to Portugal, is this a requirement? I have an Australian pension fund and wish to transfer my pension payments but not the fund. I can meet the income requirements without transferring the fund. Also if I apply for residency and the NHR is the NHR retrospective to my arrival. Australia does not have a international tax agreement with Portugal and I don’t want to be double taxed.

The transfer of funds isn't a requirement but I have been asked different things by different people at the SEF. The one thing you should have is a Portuguese Bank account which a pension fund can be transfered into. You will need a print out proving you have the bank account. This combined with your tax authority payment (after your first tax year) will prove you are really living in Portugal.
