Hi there! We have been seriously thinking about moving to Portugal from the US for a while now. My wife and I are both nurses but are more than willing to hold any jobs after we move. We have two little kids aged 11 and 5. After doing so much research I think we have to visit Portugal first and open a bank account and find a place to live prior to applying for a D7 visa. We will have around $75k saved up by spring of 2023 which is when we’re planning to move to the Algarve region. From what I understand we have to apply a few months before we are planning to move. we will have more money once we sell our house, around $350k but not when we apply for the visa because the house won’t be sold yet. I have a pension but can’t access it until 2027 and we both have 401k accounts that we can’t access until 2031 or so. I just wasn’t sure if these would help get our residency. What is the best way to apply for a D7 visa and make such a big move with kids? I was thinking we first go find a place to live so we have an address also open a bank account while there then come back here and sell our house etc? What do you think? Thank you so much.

Hi Brian,

Congratulations on your decision. I love living in Portugal. The $75k should be fine for you to be accepted. You definitely need to come and rent a place before hand. The Portuguese expects you to have a 1-year rental that is registered at the AT (that's like the Portuguese IRS).

Have you been to Portugal before? I would recommend an exploratory trip (or a few) so you can test out different locations in the algarve before you rent a place. Stay in AirBnBs of all types. The reason for this is that you will discover the issues different types of apartments/homes have which will make it easier for you to get a place that won't give you troubles (ex - mold, plumbing).

Once you know what city in the Algarve you want to live in, then you can make another trip to rent a place.

Wishing you tons of luck!
