I am a published writer and freelancer who currently lives in Spain. I am planning on relocating to Portugal for sometime to work on my next novel and do some small projects. Currently I recieve royalties for my previous works and also fees for some of my jouranlistic projects. I am trying to tax plan for the move. I hold US citizenship so I am always concerned with double taxation. I understand that Portugal has a double tax treaty with the US which offsets taxes. Do you have advice or can direct me to a CPA which can help with the NHR. I assume that is what I need.

Hi Kerim,
Did a little research and I do not see Writers or Authors on the list of professions that qualify for the Portuguese NHR regime. This is what I found for the Liberal Arts area:
Visual artists, actors and musicians:
201 – Theater, ballet, film, radio and television Artists
202 – Singers
203 – Sculptors
204 – Musicians
205 – Painters
That being said, there may be caveats. I put together a list of English Speaking lawyers in Lisbon. Perhaps one of them will be able to help.
