Are there any local festivals in Portugal?

Dear Blanca,
I have recently been scouring the internet in search of the perfect Portuguese Fete, and I need your help! Given my aim to wow fellow party goers with a hilariously outlandish flair, I was wondering if you know of any familiar festivals or fiestas around Portugal. I’m from Paris, PA and need to make sure my celebrations are up to par!

Cheers,
Pearl & Pristine (Paris, PA)

Dear Pearl & Pristine,

As a resident of Portugal, I’m happy to hear that you are interested in experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of our local fiestas! There are many festivals and events around Portugal, and each one offers a unique insight into our culture.

The Boom Festival is renowned for its awe-inspiring and transformative atmosphere, as part of a week-long celebration every two years with a live performance on an artificial lake. Carnival, which takes place in February and March, is also one of the biggest events in Portugal, with colourful parades, live music and dance performances taking place around the country. On the other hand, Holy Week in April-May is more solemn and respectful, with traditional processions taking place across the country in commemoration of Jesus’ death.

In May, we also have the famous Fatima Pilgrimage, where thousands of people from around the world come together to pray in celebration of Our Lady of Fatima’s appearance in 1917. We also have the lively Sintra Festival, taking place in June and July, as well as the Festival of Sardines every June 12th, a celebration of the Portuguese sardine industry. Other significant events include the town of Póvoa’s Festa de Sao João do Porto on June 23rd, Portugal’s National Day, the Praia Grande Beach Games and:
-The National Agricultural Fair: an event that showcases the best of Portugal’s agricultural offerings
-The Cascais Festival of the Sea: a celebration of Portugal’s long-standing traditions of fishing and seafaring

Of course, no mention of Portugal’s festivals would be complete without mentioning Christmas. During the winter months, towns around the country come alive for the holiday season, with Vila Natal Óbidos, or the Christmas Village of Óbidos, being a highlight for both locals and tourists alike.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts with your readers! Portugal is home to so many amazing festivals and events, and I’d encourage everyone to experience them if they get the chance.

Cheers,
Blanca Valbuena.
