Are The Beaches Better In Porto Or Lisbon?

Dear Blanca,

I’m visiting Porto and Lisbon soon and want to know what beach is the best to hang out and get a good tan! Are the beaches better in Porto or Lisbon?

The reason I’m asking is because I’m planning to get a golden glow in Porto or Lisbon, like a real Glamorous Gal.

Which city has the better beaches: Lisbon or Porto?

Hi Gabby,

I hope this finds you well as you plan your upcoming visit to Portugal!

So…I love Portugal, but I don’t love its beaches. Why? They tend to be cold and in many areas, they are perfect for surfing – which makes them not perfect for me to lazily swim. I prefer Croatia, France and Italy. And the Caribbean, of course.

While some may argue that the beaches in Porto are better, I say those close to Lisbon are better. Here’s why:

The beaches in Porto can often be overcrowded and not as clean as those in the capital city. Lisbon beaches (Cascais, Sintra, and Caparica) are pristine, well-maintained, and offer a tranquil atmosphere – perfect for unwinding in the sun.

My experience is that the beaches in Lisbon are a far superior option if you’re looking for peace and quiet while sunbathing. Plus, there are plenty of enjoyable activities to do on the beaches in Lisbon such as:

• Watersports: Take part in a variety of thrilling watersports, from kayaking to surfing.

• Swimming: Take a dip in the waters of Lisbon’s beaches.

Plus, you won’t be missing out on the nightlife if you chose to hit the beaches of Lisbon. With plenty of delightful seafood restaurants and historical architecture, Lisbon is so much more than just the beach!

If the beach is important to you, you may also want to check the Algarve. Although this area is busier in the Summer, the waters are calmer than they are up north.

Sincerely,
Blanca Valbuena
