As a resident of beautiful Lisbon, Portugal, I have come across several interesting facts about this European nation. Here are I three particularly interesting facts about Portugal. I hope you enjoy them.

As a tourist visiting Portugal, you should know that this country is the oldest nation-state in Europe with a rich, vibrant history. Its distinct language, culture, and borders can be seen in its oldest cities, like Lisbon. But that’s not all – did you know that Portugal is home to feral mountain goats (that have been inhabiting the area since the eighth century during the Moorish invasion? They had gone extinct, but Portugal put a focus on conservation and their populations are thriving. Conservation efforts have also been put in place to help the Iberian Wolf population.
Did you know that Portugal (35,603 mi²) is actually smaller than the state of New York (54,556 mi²)? However small Portugal may be, there’s plenty to see and do here. From the beautiful beaches on the Atlantic coast, to the rolling hills of the Central region, Sintra’s palaces, and more you’ll find a variety of landscapes and activities to enjoy. Whether you prefer relaxing on the beach, hiking through the hills, or exploring the country’s rich history and culture, there’s something for everyone in Portugal.
