Is this area safe for 2 women (in their 50’s) at night?

I will be staying in Lisbon for 1 week in September 2006. I have been reading reviews and had decided to stay at the Pensao Portuense on Rua das Portas de Santo Antao.(Near the Hard Rock Cafe.) Then in some email conversations with a Lison travel guide she implied that area was not the best place for 2 women to be strolling about at night. She then suggested some hotels near Parque Eduardo VII. I need opinions from others about her comments on safety and the propriety of women being alone in this area. I can assure you I won't be out roaming the streets anywhere past midnight - I'll be too tired
