Stores where you can buy appliances and electronics in Lisbon

Where to Purchase Appliances in Lisbon

As a tech geek-ified family getting modern electronics in Portugal is a horror and a nightmare.  Get stuff shipped, charged 10x VAT, bring it yourself the electrical setup in apartments break everything. We moved to Lisbon, we brought over our stuff (not something I recommend – just sell your crap and buy new here).  We were able to get a good number of our electronics to work (most of the new stuff), but some things (like our 10-year-old 60″ flat screen) just did not cut it. Needless to say, we had to do some shopping. If you need to pick up brand new electronics in Lisbon, here are a few places you can purchase appliances in Lisbon.

Where to Purchase Appliances in Lisbon

Mi Stores This Chinese brand has a few stores in Portugal. Their electronics are pretty good and nicely priced. I don’t like their phones, but I have had their wireless head phones, their blow dryer, and one of their lights and love it. They carry things like heaters, air purifiers, televisions, and more. Xiaomi store locations in Lisbon, Portugal
  • Chiado at R. Áurea 153
  • Benfica at Centro Comercial Colombo
Box Jumbo This is where we got our TV. Box is part of the Jumbo chain and they sell pretty much everything you could want. They also accept American credit cards, so this was great since we did not have a Portuguese one when we first arrived. Delivery of our TV was fast and easy, and everyone spoke English quite well which made our purchasing much easier. A few things you can buy here:
  • Televisions
  • Kitchen appliances (fridges, stoves, hand blenders)
  • Computers & smartphones
  • Cameras
  • Air conditioners
There are three Box locations in Lisbon, Portugal:
  • Campo Pequeno: Avenida João XXI, nº3
  • Amoreiras: Centro Comercial Amoreiras, Avenida Eng. Duarte Pacheco, Loja 1
  • Pascoal de Melo: Rua Pascoal de Melo, nº47A
Stores in Lisbon
You can purchase all kinds of items in El Corte Ingles including electronics and clothes
El Corte Ingles Think of this store as Macy’s. You can purchase almost everything here. We purchased our induction stovetop here. They take American credit cards, but the biggest drawback here for us was that nobody spoke English in the electro-domestic department, so it was a touch harder to communicate. It also took quite a long time to get our cooktop and to have it installed.
  • Computers
  • Cameras
  • Televisions
  • Smartphones
  • Blowdryers
  • Coffee makers
  • Dishwashing machines
There is only one Corte Ingles location in Lisbon which is over at Av. António Augusto de Aguiar 31 in the Avenidas Novas neighborhood. Notes:  The sales people are pretty bad.  They know only there job and when you ask something like  “does this come in black?” they will have to get a manager involved. Ikea Yup, Ikea. You can’t get electronics like smartphones, but you can pick up major household appliances. Their delivery and installation services were incredibly better than El Corte Ingles.
  • Refrigerators
  • Ovens
  • Hobs
  • Microwaves
  • Dishwashers
There are two Ikeas “in” Lisbon. It usually costs 10-15 to get there by Uber, so save this trip if for when you need to purchase more household things.
  • Alfragide: R. Oscar Niemeyer, Amadora
  • Loures: R. 28 de Setembro 250, Loures

Cash Converters This store is a used stuff store, not just electronics, but everything. When you buy something, it comes with at least a 1-year warranty (but you must be meticulous about keeping your receipts). What you can purchase depends on when you come in. Things you can normally purchase there:
  • Fans & Heaters
  • Drills

Pro Tip: Don’t purchase from Amazon. Currently, there is no Amazon Portugal so you’d need to puchase from either .es .de or .uk. Shipping returns will kill you since it costs at least 15 Euros. Anything that is shipped from Amazon.com (the US site) will be subject to taxes and at times this can cost more than the item you purchased.

  1. A tip for shopping at Amazon.es: 1) they currently have actual overnight delivery for a fairly small extra fee. Don’t fall into that trap! It’s quite common that if you aren’t waiting for the delivery they won’t leave it in front of your apartment door. They can take it back to their mailing center and that’s it. What happened to me is they said they might try up to two times to redeliver; they didn’t. And no more emails from the delivery company. I called Amazon and they instantly refunded my money. Not the worst experience I’ve had. Three weeks later it was delivered to my hand.

The tip I spoke about is to have the slow mail from CTT deliver it. It’s cheaper, more reliable, and they leave a slip telling you where you can pick it up in your neighborhood. (The overnight delivery company was 50 km from my apt!)

  2. Michael,

These are awesome tips. I too have experienced Amazon saying things were delivered when they were taken back to the mailing center. I read in October that Amazon was changing courier so that CTT would be their new supplier. They have a 3-year contract. I don’t know when this goes into place but may save you an extra step. I’ll see what I can dig up on this.

  3. Hey, this post changed! There were other stores cited – what happened to them?

(not a big deal, just wondering, since we are finally ready to buy appliances

  4. Hi Jonny,

I haven’t updated the article in a while…but there is an addition I need to make. Also, check our MediaMrkt. There is a large one by Benfica Stadium.

    Happy shopping,

    Blanca
