What neighborhoods in or around Lisbon would you recommend someone to visit to see some fine examples traditional Portuguese architecture? I have been to Lisbon years ago during university but that was a while ago.   I studies some architecture in school and I want see how the Portuguese style differs from the Spanish. I visited Belem I think on my last trip but the only thing I remember was an amazing monastery.  Everything else is kind of a blur. Also is there any books or websites you would suggest studying to learn more on the Portuguese Architecture?  Preferably in English.

If you want to see traditional everyday architecture I would visit Alfama or Mouraria. Both are what typical poor (everyone was/is poor). So small 4 bedroom 40meter flats where people live outside more then in.

If you want to see the classical stuff go to Baixia and Chiado. It is where the old large department stores were. Very 1940-1960 in time period.

If you want to see some of time during dictator check out the later 60's constructions near the bullring or north of Parque Eduardo VII.

To me I watch the floors, the tiles and the windows. They will tell you about an area.
