I am bring my family from Boston to Faro for my daughter’s birthday. We are 3rd generation Portuguese but most of our family now lives in Rhode Island. I’ve been to Lisbon and Porto a few times but not down south. We will be flying into Porto for 2 nights then 3-nights in Lisbon.
We will be renting from Europcar then driving down. Is there a quick route down that takes us out of traffic and maybe have a few sights to see. I know the drive is about 3-hours so we would want to break it up some.
My questions are:
Any sights to see on the way south of Lisbon?
How much are the tolls from Lisboa to Algarve?
Is there cheaper car rentals then Europcar?
Thanks for your advice and your blog is great. I check in to learn more about my homeland!
Umm. If you are taking the main tollway just do the straight drive. You can stop at a few towns in the Alentejo (Setubal and then take ferry to Troia) but it will be slightly out of the way. Some people who really want leisurely would visit an Evora if they are going to the eastern Algarve. Sadly there really isn’t any place I have seen on the tollway drive that is worth a long stop. There are a few monastaries and ruins if that is your thing.
