Where to Go on a Day Trip from Lisbon

5 Quick Day Trips from Lisbon Portugal

It’s true that Lisbon is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, and you can’t leave Portugal without checking it out. However, don’t think for a moment that the country ends abruptly at Lisbon’s doorstep. Beyond the city limits, there are many day trips worth taking! Today we’re going to explore five such possibilities that offer something in 5 Quick Day Trips from Lisbon.

5 Quick Day Trips from Lisbon

  1. Cascais and Estoril

Why you should take a day trip from Lisbon to Cascais and Estoril: These beautiful coastal towns offer a different side of Portugal than what you’d get in Lisbon or Porto. The former is more modern and the latter is more traditional. Both have beaches where you can go for a swim, and both are within a short drive from Lisbon.

Things to do in Cascais and Estoril
Walk along the coast, possibly with a stop at one of Cascais’ many restaurants or hotels for a drink.

Visit the casino in Estoril, if you’re of age (and go to the Chinese restaurant in the Casino – it is superb).

Take photos of the multiple castles and luxury homes that line the Tagus River along the drive to Cascais/Estoril.

How to get there
You can take a bus from central Lisbon, but we recommend renting a car if you have the time since it will allow you to visit both and stop wherever you want. It’s worth taking the scenic route north through Sintra, which requires a bit of time on the road, but it’s well worth it for drivers looking for something different from Lisbon. The train from Cais do Sodre Station is also a great option for a day trip to Cascais and Estoril from Lisbon.

  1. Sintra

Why you should take a day trip from Lisbon to Sintra. This Palace-laden city is a mid-range option for day trips outside of Lisbon. It’s bigger than the other destinations on this list, and with more than 30 castles, palaces, convents, and buildings to wander around. On the outskirts of Sintra is a natural park with green areas, cliffs, and caves. It is a wonderful hiking area.

Things to do in Sintra
Visit the castle complex of Quinta dos Pinheiros Palace. If you’re into castles, this is a must-see on your Portugal itinerary. The trek up the hill to see the castle is intense but to walk around the palaces and see the landscaping you’ll be transported back in time. Imagine Rivendell in Lord of the Rings.

Take time to walk its cobblestone streets, if you’re not visiting one of the many parks and nature preserves.

  1. Obidos

Why you should take a day trip from Lisbon to Obidos. This tiny walled town offers the unique advantage of being both historic and picturesque. The small town center is still very much the way it was hundreds of years ago, but it’s not full of tourists during the off-season. This hilly town is best experienced on foot. It’s less than two hours from Lisbon and it’s a nice break for cyclists, too.

Things to do in Obidos
Visit King Sancho I’s Castle, which is a favorite among the locals. It’s visible from all over town.

Wander the narrow cobblestone streets and shop for souvenirs in one of the local shops or art galleries.

Make sure to try some of the local Ginjinha. A drink made from the Ginjinha cherry. It has an unmistakeable cherry flavor that hits you full on. It’s simultaneously sweet and strong, which is my favorite kind of alcohol. Try it in a cup made of Chocolate. You won’t be sorry.

  1. Santarem

Why you should take a day trip from Lisbon to Santarem. If you are into gorgeous views you must visit Portas do Sol in Santarem. It has the most beautiful view of the Tejo river that seem to go on forever. The city also boasts incredible churches, and because it is not so touristy, you will run into some buildings that are vestiges of its golden age. There is beauty around every corner

Things to do in Santarem
Visit the city center of the town, which looks like it has been frozen in time from the 1600s. Stand in awe of its stone architecture. The city is a ghost town of beauty. See old churches and take in the medieval vibe.

Visit the castle and the castle ruins overlooking Santarem on a hill, which gives a great view of the city and its river.

Go for a walk along the river to rest after all of your walking around.

  1. Caparica

Why you should take a day trip from Lisbon to Caparica. Love beaches? Lisbon doesn’t have a proper beach, but if you are looking for neverending sand and clear water, this is so worth the trip. It’s not the most beautiful beach I’ve ever seen, but it’s a lot less crowded than Cascais/Estoril, and therefore even better if you want a relaxing day outside of Lisbon.

Things to do in Caparica
Wander around the beach, which is nice and wide.

Have a drink at one of the many bars or restaurants overlooking the beach. Everything is beach and holiday vibe, so don’t expect 5-star. This is where the locals spend long summer days. Be a local, get a bikini, and soak in the sun….and don’t forget to try a Bola de Berlim…trust me on that one.

Each of these 5 places was chosen because I’ve been and frequent. All are special in their own light. Wherever you choose to go, enjoy your trip. Portugal is a beautiful country and there’s so much to see and do.
