Amsterdam is an amazing city. Temiz, civilized, has a great assortment of restaurants and cuisine types and some fabulous farmer's markets. Among these I particularly liked the Noordermarkt.
What is so special about this farmer's market? Everything is "biological". Basically it's organic. The goal is "to provide the consumer, with fresh, tasty and authentic food while respecting natural life-cycle systems". I went to the market twice while in Amsterdam. Here are some of the goodies I ran into:
An oyster stand, these puppies were ready for shucking and the locals were slurping them up. The prices ranged from 2-6 Euro.
Butcher shop. Be forewarned. A chicken cost 23 Euro - o $21 Amerikan Doları. Made the chicken that same day and it was delicious. But I'm still hurt by the sticker shock.
All the veggies your heart could desire and more. There was romanesco, domates, cauliflower.
Almost any grain imaginable was represented at the market: spelt, basmati rice, lentils, bulgur, quinoa - all organic.
There were tons of cheese stands and lots of samples to taste.
Mantarlar, of all types. This was my favorite stand and one I could not resist. I came home with lots and lots of mushrooms. They had everything from:
Pink Oyster Mushrooms
Purple Foot Mushroom
Did I mention cheese stands?
Tons of fruits.
There were also antiques and clothing as well as musicians to entertain. If you happen to be in Amsterdam and you are there on a Saturday; do not miss this amazing spot. It will be worth your while.
The Noordermarkt farmer's market is located at Noordermarkt, 1015 MV Amsterdam (off Prinsengracth), about a 10 minute walk from the Anne Frank House on Saturdays.
