Want to get around Porto or Lisbon like a local? Okay, this isn’t the post for that. This is just a list of your basic Portuguese phrases. Nothing here is too complex, but these phrases will help you get around. I have used these multiple times and it’s a “go to”. If you spit this stuff, people will be impressed. Try and do it slightly nasally or just make believe your Brazilian and they will love it (or at least they will laugh at you – but you will get what you need or where you need to go).
Basic Portuguese Phrases
Goodbye –> Adeus
Good morning –> Bom dia
Good afternoon –> Boa tarde
Good evening/night –> Boa noite
Please –> Por Favor
Thank You –> Obrigado (If you are a woman say obrigada)
You’re welcome –> De nada
I’m sorry –> Desculpe
Excuse me –> Com licença
Sir –> Senhor
Madam –> Senhora
Yes –> Sim
No –> Não
Do you speak English? –> Fala inglês?
I can’t speak Portuguese well –> Não falo bem português
Where is? –> Onde é que é + place?, Onde fica + place? Onde é + place?
Today –> Hoje
Tomorrow –> Amanhã
How much is it? –> Quanto custa?
I’m just looking–> Estou só a ver obrigado/a
What time do you open/close? –> A que horas abre/fecha?
One –> Um(a)
Two –> Dois(Duas)
Three –> Três
Four –> Quatro
Five –> Cinco
Where is the bathroom? –> Onde fica a casa de banho?
How are you doing?/How do you do? —> Como está?, Como vai?, Tudo bem?
The bill please –> A conta por favor
railway station –> estação de comboios
Do you have any vacant rooms? ~ –> Tem um quarto livre?
I have a reservation –> Tenho um quarto reservado
breakfast ~ –> pequeno-almoço
dinner ~ –> jantar
It’s an emergency –> É uma emergência
