I’ll leave the best for last (the one I picked for my membership), but I’ll give you a breakdown of the best gyms in Lisbon so you can stay healthy and in shape (and still enjoy all of nourriture délicieuse de Lisbonne).
Les meilleurs gymnases à Lisbonne

The Good: Ceci est votre salle de gym budgétaire. Au premier adhésion, you can go to any of the clubs within the chain and there are plenty (almost 20 in the Lisbon area).
The Bad: They require that you have a Portuguese or European bank account (no US credit cards or cash are accepted).
This is your no-frills convenient gym.
Locations: Alfragide, Almirante Reis, Amadora, Amoreiras, arc aveugle, Benfica, Parc des Nations, Picoas, Santos.

The Good: This is one of the best gyms in Lisbon because of its great price and everything it has to offer. It’s got all your regular gym stuff and more. There is a pool (of course), but there are also programs like fencing, golf, tennis, and more.
The Bad: They are too damn far from my house for me to join. There are also two hidden fees, a join fee of €50 and an annual member quota that varies according to your membership. These are on top of your monthly dues, but still comes out to be quite affordable when you consider all the gym has to offer.
The Verdict: Ceci est un favori local, it is priced well and if you feel like a gerbil on a ball when you get on a treadmill, all the amenities here are probably great for you.
Locations: Amoreiras

Holmes place $$$
The Good: Parce que c'est un club de sport haut de gamme, l'équipement et les équipements sont fantastiques. Most locations (there are 6 in Lisbon) have pools.
The Verdict: grandes machines, de superbes équipements, grandes classes. Very expensive (for Portugal) and too many people (which may be good if you’re new in town and looking to meet people).
Locations: 5 Octobre, Alvalade, Amoreiras, Avenida da Liberdade, Avenue défenseurs clés, Parc des Nations.

club VII $$$$
The Good: This is more of a country club – sports club combination. It’s the Chi-chiest of the gyms and offers an indoor-outdoor pool, de nombreux courts de tennis, un pré, et de l'équipement incroyable. Il est également situé dans Parque Eduardo VII, donc l'emplacement est fabuleux. l'élite de Lisbonne va ici, donc si vous cherchez à frotter les coudes, this is the place.
The Bad: L'adhésion a un coût, et ce n'est pas assez. Memberships are yearly and you can cancel as long as you give 3 months notice. Cost per person is either €93/111 (with or without tennis).
The Verdict: Si vous avez l'argent, rejoindre.
Locations: Parque Eduardo VII

The Good: c'est un de més préférés, et je l'aurais rejoint si ce n'était pas si loin de ma nouvelle place dans la quartier de New Avenues. Ce club est pas prétentieux du tout. Le prix est tout à fait juste sur une base mensuelle, the equipment is fantastic and there are plenty of classes (take the Samba class – it’s awesome). People here are fit (seriously fit) which is quite inspirational when you are about to give up.
There are 4 clubs au total, mais, seulement 1 à Lisbonne bon.
The Verdict: Si vous êtes dans le Santos / Cais do Sodré zone, this should be your choice.
Locations: Santos

Virgin active (Now part of Holmes Place) $$$
The Good: This was Richard Branson’s gym and it is definitely one of the Best Gyms in Lisbon. The equipment is some of the best in town (some has even been updated after the Holmes Place acquisition) and if you are looking for a particular machine, ils l'auront.
The gym is huge and because it has a higher price tag (and an ultra-secret location), il n'a jamais emballé. You can also pay with American credit cards – a big plus for me. It costs €134 for two of us.
The Verdict: Je vais ici. Needless to say, I love it.
Locations: Palacio Sottomaior
I’ve updated this piece to show how it has changed with the aquisition…which is for the better 🙂
Got other gyms in Lisbon I should check out? Have questions about a particular club? Ask in the comments.
Looks like you made a great choice! Stay healthy friend!
I love my new gym. I did well over an hour today. 30 minutes on threadmill, 15 on the ski machine, 30 on the elliptical, and 15 minutes of arms. I’ll be back in my fighting shape in no time ;D
Thanks for summary. Une chose. If you knew enough to decide if a gym was pricey or not then you also knew what the fee was for each. But that piece of info you left out. Could you go back and put in some idea of how much each one is? Thanks
Depends on when you’re reading the article. Expect for the Cheap $ to be 30 euros, the mid tier 50 euros and the expensive 70-100 euros per month.
I am moving to Chiado and am looking for a gym with a nice pool that offers Pilates and aqua aerobics…any suggestions?
To get everything you’re looking for, the best bet would probably be the Holmes Place on Avenida Liberdade, not really “Chiado” but close enough that you can walk. It has a pool and they do plenty of classes including hydrofit, pilates, etc…otherwise you probably have to go to a smaller Pilates studio in Chiado proper. Envy has pilates but no pool, so it just depends on whether you want to take the walk to Liberdade which is a 10-15 minute walk depending on where in the neighborhood you are. Hope this helps – enjoy Lisboa. I love it!
Hi!
I am traveling to Portugal (Algarve, Porto & Lisbon) this summer and am looking for work out studios, not necessarily gyms with machines as I assume most of those require a membership. Since I am going to be there for a little over a week I would like to take a class or 2 and wanted to see if you knew of any spin / barre / bootcamp style studios / classes?
Thanks!
I know there are some, just don’t know with the short term stay. You may want to try them: https://www.instagram.com/Thestudiogym/
salut,
I am visiting Lisbon for a week. Do you know if fitness hut or Holmes places allow to pay per entry, or do you have to be a member?
Merci
I just messaged Holmes place to ask (I’m out of town, so I can’t ask at the front desk). Fitness Hut was a PIA to join, so I’m pretty sure that’s a no with them. Will update you once I hear back from Holmes 😉
FYI – It is possible to purchase a daily pass at Fitness Hut. Their site says it is only available when clubs are open, and limited to the number of memberships of each club. So maybe drop by when you arrive & ask 😀
Thank you so much for your help. I’ve just arrived so will give fitness hub a go and let you know.
Fitness hut was fine, but I fell in love with Virgin Active (now Holmes Place). Would love to know what your thoughts are on fitness hut.
I will be going to lisbon for a week and would love to go somewhere close to alfama? any suggestions I don’t mind a 15 minute walk.
Just need some free weights nothing super fancys 🙂
Wow…that’s a challenge. I don’t think I’ve seen any gyms in the Alfama. Closest would probably be Envy in Chiado, that will be a 20-minute walk. The Alfama does have a great waterside road where you can run and get some cardio 🙂
